Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help kill H. pylori infection and support the treatment by enhancing intestinal microbiota and reducing side effects.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a common bacteria that can cause gastritis, peptic ulcers, and other health issues. H. pylori infection can lead to ulcers in the stomach and small intestine, and it is responsible for the majority of gastric and duodenal ulcers. 50% of the world's population is estimated to have had h pylori according to NIH.

Symptoms of H. pylori infection vary but include abdominal discomfort, appetite loss, nausea, bloating, burping, and fatigue. Medical treatment for H. pylori infections involves antibiotics and acid reducers, but antibiotic resistance and side effects are concerns.

Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium probiotic can help to kill H Pylori according to research. A 2021 study authored by M Keikha, mentioned that probiotics, specifically Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp, can effectively eradicate Helicobacter pylori infections.

These probiotics, when used as adjuvant therapy alongside standard antibiotic treatment, contribute to the effective treatment of H. pylori infection.

A 2018 study authored by N Westerik, found that the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus can reduce gastric pathology associated with Helicobacter pylori infection in East African populations.

How Common Is H Pylori?

Africa has a population of 1.4 billion and a reported 70.1% of people in Africa of have H Pylori. 70.1% of 1.4 billion means 980.14 million Africans may have H Pylori.

US has a population of 331.9 million and a reported 30% to 40% of people in the US have H Pylori. 99.57 million to 132.76 million Americans may have H. pylori.

Canada has a population of 38.25 million and a reported 20% to 30% of people in Canada are estimated to have H Pylori. Approximately 7.65 million to 11.475 million people in Canada are estimated to have H. pylori.

UK has a population of 67.33 people and a reported 40% of people in the UK are estimated to have H Pylori. Around 26.932 million people in the UK may have H. pylori.

Australia has a population of 25.69 million people and reported 15% of Australians have H Pylori. Approximately 3.854 million people in Australia may have H. pylori.

How Do Probiotics Kill H Pylori?

Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium Probiotics, have 3 killing benefits in relation to Helicobacter pylori infection according to a 2022 study authored by A Mestre.

  1. 1
Probiotics produce antimicrobial substances that can suppress H. pylori activity and damage its cell wall.
  2. 2
Probiotics enhance the mucosal barrier by increasing IgA production and competitively interacting with microbial adhesion sites.
  3. 3
Probiotics modulate immune responses and reduce the production of inflammatory molecules induced by H. pylori.

How Long Does It Take For Probiotics To Kill H Pylori?

Lactobacillus reuteri has demonstrated potential in reducing H. pylori levels after 4-6 weeks of therapy according to Dore et al. Probiotics could potentially enhance the success rate of H. pylori eradication treatment in around 28 to 42 days but the timeframe will vary on different factors.

Does Saccharomyces Boulardii Kill H Pylori?

Yes, Saccharomyces Boulardii probiotics have a moderate but significant killing effect on H Pylori. A 2005 study authored by M Gotteland, showed that Saccharomyces Boulardii plus inulin had a moderate but significant effect in reducing H Pylori colonization, with eradication observed in 6.5% of the children.

S. Boulardii with inulin holds promise as an agent that interferes with H Pylori colonization, although further studies are needed to confirm these results and understand the underlying mechanisms. Inulin is a type of dietary fiber that is found in certain plants and acts as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Can Kefir Kill H Pylori?

Kefir milk is effective in killing H Pylori infection when used along side antibiotic treatment. A 2014 study authored by Jacob Schor, found that adding kefir to the standard triple antibiotic therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection significantly improved eradication rates of the bacteria.

In patients who consumed kefir milk, H. pylori infection was eradicated in 78.2% compared to only 50% in the group that received antibiotics plus a placebo. Kefir milk is a fermented dairy beverage that is rich in Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium bacteria and yeast cultures, known as kefir grains, which impart a unique tangy flavor and a creamy consistency.

Can Kombucha Kill H Pylori?

There is no research to suggest that Kombucha can kill H Pylori. Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage made by fermenting sweetened black or green tea with a symbiotic culture of acetic acid bacteria and yeast, resulting in a slightly fizzy and tangy drink with potential health benefits but not for H Pylori.
